Etz Ami was „The Union of Progressive Jews in the 'Ruhr valley'“. We were a congregation of liberal Jews throughout the Ruhr Valley. The Ruhr Valley is a major industrial and former coal-mining region in the valley of the Ruhr river in northwestern Germany; it includes the cities Bochum, Dortmund, Duisburg, Essen, Gelsenkirchen, and the „Münsterland“, the area around the city of Münster.

The synagogue we used as our sanctuary is rural and is more than 200 years old. The ceiling is decorated with golden stars on a blue background. Some additional information is available on the page about the synagogue.

We thank all visitors who visited the town festival on the occasion of the 200th anniversary and the 70th anniversary of the reestablishment of the Jewish community of Munich and Upper Bavaria on June 21, 2015!It was a wonderful, joyful celebration, and every one of them has helped!

1813 - initiated by Graf Montgelas - the Jews edict issued that should herald the emancipation of the Jews in Bavaria.Although it still took until 1861 until the legal equality was regulated by law, after all, the Jewish community was founded as early as 1815. 2015, we can therefore celebrate its 200th anniversary and the 70th birthday of the Jewish community, which - has been re-established on 15 July 1945 - after twelve dark years.

Landesverband der Jüdischen Gemeinden
von Schleswig-Holstein, K.d.ö.R.

The Regional Council of the Jewish Congregations of Schleswig-Holstein was founded in 2002. Since then it has been a Member of the World Union for Progressive Judaism. In January 2005, a five-year treaty of financial support was concluded between the two Regional Councils in Schleswig-Holstein and the Land Schleswig-Holstein. Since November 2005, the Regional Council has been a member of the Zentral der Juden in Deutschland (Central Council of Jews in Germany – www.zentralratdjuden.de)

Nowadays the following 5 congregations are organized in the Regional Council:

Jewish Congregation of Ahrensburg-Stormarn
Jewish Congregation of Bad Segeberg
Jewish Congregation of Elmshorn
Jewish Congregation of Kiel
Jewish Congregation of Pinneberg

The congregations’ number of members range between about 30 and 180. Rabbi Dr. Walter Rothschild has been appointed as Rabbi of all 5 congregations. Within the Regional Council the congregations are autonomous. The Regional Council represents the congregations towards central Jewish and governmental organizations only with regard to political matters.

The work within the congregations and the Regional Council is mostly done by volunteers. The Regional Council supports this work for example with regular meetings, financial support, and a quarterly newsletter named “Juedisches Schleswig-Holstein” as common platform.

Due to this structure there is a very vibrant and well-developed communication between our congregations on the one hand and between them and the Regional Council on the other hand. Flexibility, openness, mutual support and help are our way to success.

Our congregation was founded in 1996 is a member of the Union of Progressive Jews in Germany and the "World Union for Progressive Judaism". We are building on a liberal tradition in Cologne, which decisively determined the Jewish life of our city to the Shoa.Expression of this liberality was the synagogue in the Roonstrasse, which was the center of liberal Jewish life in Cologne until the desecration and destruction of Kristallnacht in 1938 (today is there the Orthodox Jewish community of Cologne). Our vibrant and growing community tries responsibility pick from this past and to use to consolidate the liberal Judaism in Cologne and beyond the boundaries of Cologne and also contribute. With respect for tradition and before the learned of today we want a Jewish life that constantly evolves and is actively dealing with today's world.

Since the beginning of 2003, the Jewish community of Marburg has had a new home in the former AOK building in Liebigstrasse, which was bought with the generous help of the municipality of Marburg. We urgently needed larger rooms because the community center in Pilgrimstein was too small to accommodate the increasing numbers of members who have joined us in recent years.

So, today we have sufficient space in the synagogue and cultural center for our rich community life and many events. After all, Judaism is not only a religion but also one of the oldest cultures in the world. As a setting for dialog, the new community center will contribute to increased knowledge about this.

Today we can also offer an elevator for the elderly and handycapped.
