Aish UK was created in 1993. Our core values focus us with the goal of inspiring and invigorating a renewed sense of passion for, and commitment to, Judaism. Assimilation, intermarriage, and apathy have caused so many young Jews to drop out of the 3000 year journey of the Jewish people.

Our educators believe that when we stop judging others and start listening, then people are willing to ask, to debate, to share and to engage. We also believe that the Jewish tradition is not only deep and fulfilling, but also compelling, engaging and relevant to the young person today.

Over the past 15 years, theory has been born out by practice. The demand for trips, events and courses has increased year on year. From 40 people on an Israel trip in 1993 to 1600 on learning trips in 2008; from one small office to 8 branches and 6 affiliate organisations up and down the country, serving in excess of 2000 people a week. Today, in 2013, Aish programmes are being run in schools, university campuses, offices, centres, synagogues and communities in every corner of Britain.

The excitement and energy of a young Jewish revival is happening. More and more young Jews are finding a confidence in rising up to take their place in the ongoing adventure of the Jewish journey.

Whatever your background, whatever your beliefs, we look forward to welcoming you to join the discussion and the debate, not forgetting the fun!

Rabbi Chaim Yitzchok Cohen started to direct the Beis Menachem, Beis Moshiach, Chabad Community Centres in 1994. Since then under his guidance and leadership, Beis Menachem have initiated and established a wide range of educational and social activities for all segments of the community. Their success in this field became renowned across the globe.

The secret of his success is the commitment to his mission; to prepare the world for the coming of Moshiach. He is one of the devoted Shluchim (emissaries) of the Lubavitcher Rebbe Melech HaMoshiach whose guidance and teachings are implemented in the daily lives of all who are associated with Beis Menachem.

The Rebbe MH"M has charged him and every Jew with the task of reaching and helping every single Jew come closer to G-d. Thus all the activities - from one on one private lessons to Menorah lightings, from Megilah readings for the elderly to donning Tefillin for countless Israelis who frequent the Centre on weekdays - are permeated with the same theme, anticipating the imminent arrival of Moshiach.

It is his fervent hope that the efforts will achieve the desired goal of making the entire world a place in which G-d can dwell, reaching the fulfilment of the purpose for which G-d had created it, with the coming of the Moshiach.

Apart from Shabbos and Yom Tov services, in addition to the Shabbos and Yomtov meals which are provided for the many visitors, midweek minyanim, shiurim and other activities include:

Adult Education
Bar/Bat Mitzvah Instruction
Communal Lectures
Holiday Awareness Programs
Hospital Visitation
Kitchen Koshering
Jewish Library
Mezuzah and Tefillin Checking
One-on-One Study
Shabbat Hospitality

We pride ourselves on providing something for everyone, ‘Reaching Every Jew With Love

Operation Hours: Fri Evening Services,Shabbat Morning Services,High Holidays
Phone: 020 7794 3949   Fax: 020 7431 4559

Belsize Square Synagogue is a thriving progressive Jewish community blending modernity with tradition. Uniquely within the UK, it derives from the continental liberal (or liberale) movement, having been founded in 1939 by refugees mainly from Germany. While many members are children, grand-children or great-grand-children of the founders, the flavour of Belsize Square is enriched by young people and families who have joined from around the world, creating a lively, welcoming and friendly atmosphere.

We cherish and maintain our distinctive heritage especially through our synagogue services andmusic:

Synagogue worship is dignified, traditional in form, and mainly in Hebrew. Men and women sit together and both may be called to the Torah reading.

Music is central to our liturgy – Belsize Square is exceptional among non-orthodox synagogues in having a professional chazzan, as well as three choirs, and we preserve the legacy of European Jewry through the work of composers such as Lewandowski and Sulzer. As well as the synagogue service, music features in the cultural life of our community through concerts and events.

Belsize Square Synagogue is independent and not affiliated to any of the major strands of Judaism, but maintains its own thriving communal life with a full range of activities:

Our education and cultural programme centres around a children’scheder and regular adult discussion group, supplemented by ad hoc lectures, film presentations, short courses, concerts, a book club and other events.

We have a lively youth programme including camps and a football club.

A professionally co-ordinated programme of community care is available for older members and others in need, for example following illness or bereavement.

Jewish life events are marked and celebrated in traditional ways, and we provide a conversion programme for those contemplating joining the Jewish people.

The Belsize Square Synagogue building hosts Keren day nursery throughout the week.

CONGREGATION OF JACOB

351-353 Commercial Road, London, E1 2PS, , England
Phone: 0207-790-2874

Kehillas Ya'akov is a "valuable and venerable relic of Anglo-Jewish social history" and "one of England's last intimate folk-art Eastern European synagogues" (Dr Sharman Kadish).

It is one of three synagogues in London's East End still functioning and was the first Mizrachi Synagogue in Britain, founded in 1903 by Morris Koenigsberg and Abraham Schwalbe. It is likely that this congregation, which consisted of first generation immigrants from Poland, Lithuania and Russia; Orthodox Jews from small shtetls such as Stetziver, Kalisz and Vikaviskis met in the front room of Mr Koenigsburg's family house on Commercial Road, later occupying our present premises in 1921, which was redesigned by Lewis Solomon & Son, honorary architects to the Federation of Synagogues.

Today we are diverse, with members from all types of trades and backgrounds. We are affiliated to three burial societies, Federation, Adath and Chesed Ve'emeth, but we are most proud of the fact that we retain our independence, reflected by the fact that the synagogue is owned and managed by members of the community. Kehillas Ya'akov "is a remarkable survival... and is all the more exceptional for continuing in use as a synagogue" (English Heritage Report 2002).

We are a friendly group, truly offering a hearty welcome to anyone who comes through our doors. We are currently embarked on a regeneration project; to restore not only the original beauty of our building but also the community that it serves.

Edgware & District Reform Synagogue, founded in 1935, is now the largest Synagogue in Europe, with approximately 2000 families amongst its membership, caring for almost 4000 people.

Our senior Minister, Rabbi Daniel Smith, was appointed in 1993. In January 2002, Rabbi Neil Kraft became our Associate Minister. Together our two rabbis combine their great range of skills to support the religious and spiritual life of the community, leading services, teaching both formally and informally and offering pastoral support to members.

Our religious services reflect the more traditional wing of Reform Judaism. While much of the services are conducted in Hebrew, we also include English, enabling all to follow and understand. Music plays an integral part of our services and EDRS boasts a marvellous choir. Both men and women play prominent and equal roles in leading services and the running of the Synagogue.

Through our website and the regular monthly publication or our Synagogue magazine, EMET, we keep in touch with all our members, publicising the wide range of activities run by professional staff and volunteers. EMET also welcomes members to share their experiences - travel, personal achievements and family celebrations - through its columns.

Jews have lived and worshipped in Exeter for over 250 years. The synagogue, which was built in 1763, is small, beautiful and, happily, still used regularly for services. It has been carefully restored by successive generations, the last time being in 2013 to mark the start of our 250th anniversary year.

The synagogue, by its very existence and antiquity, forms a focal point for the Jewish identity of many Jews living in the South West, of a wide variety of backgrounds, persuasions and commitments.

The Work of the Congregation

All the work we do is completely voluntary. We provide religious services, social activities, cultural events and other forms of contact for Jewish people, and for our many friends. We visit the sick in hospital, we visit Jewish prisoners in local prisons, we officiate at weddings and funerals, all to the best of our ability. Thousands of school-children visit the synagogue each year, for most of whom it is their first contact with Jews and Judaism. We actively promote inter-faith understanding.

Ilford Synagogue
Ilford Synagogue was founded in 1936, and moved to its present site over 40 years ago.  It serves a varied membership ranging from strictly orthodox to less observant members, but at the same time having a warm and friendly atmosphere.

Ilford Synagogue is a member of the United Synagogue, a body that was established in 1870 and has now become the largest body of its kind in the world.  The United Synagogue also supports the Office of the Chief Rabbi and his rabbinical court, known as the London Beth Din.

Our Building
We are blessed with a wonderful “1960s Cathedral style” community building. We are continuing a programme of improvements and modernisation that is literally “building today for our tomorrow”. So far this has included major refurbishment of the toilet facilities and a project to make the vestibule much lighter and welcoming.

However, the work to keep the building and its facilities in a state in which our users can gain maximum benefit is, as always, an ongoing task. We have just concluded a major refurbishment of the Mark Lewis Hall and the kitchen. This will enable us to maintain Ilford Synagogue at the vanguard of Jewish communal life in the Essex area.

Kenton United Synagogue

Welcome to Kenton United Synagogue - the Shul in the Park.

Experience the beauty of our shul, in its splendid surroundings.

We are conveniently situated and well-served, for quick journeys into central London, by three underground lines – the Metropolitan, the Jubilee and the Bakerloo, as well as by an overground railway. We are also only twenty minutes away from Golders Green by car, and the same time in other directions, to a variety of English countryside landscapes.

Less than a mile away, is the largest Jewish primary school in Europe - Sinai, and, next door to it, is the largest Jewish secondary school – JFS, both of which give a first class education and can be reached in a few minutes by car or foot, from Kenton itself. So, if you need to get to these schools, why have the frustration of sitting in endless traffic or worrying about long bus journeys.

We are a friendly community, with a full range of religious, social, educational and welfare activities.

Within our website you will find the 'heart' of Kenton and feel the vibrancy of the community. There is something for everyone to be involved with, either as a participant or as a volunteer.

Look out for our additional website pages. We will insert a photo gallery of our events and members' celebrations, as well as 'hatch, match and dispatch' announcements. We also intend to have an interactive facility and a local trading portal using modern technology.

This website will always be current and dynamic as it will be updated very regularly, and you can play a part in that. If something you are involved with is not mentioned, then make sure it is! Enjoy.

Kingsbury United Synagogue

Kingsbury Green, London, NW9, England
Phone: 020 8204 8089

the right a development of affordable homes, priced between £600 to £800, on the recently constructed Valley Drive Estate. The first Jewish families to move in to the area were immediately concerned in establishing Hebrew classes for their children and then, by a narrow majority, to become affiliated members of the United Synagogue. Property values have, of course, increased somewhat over the years, but it is considerably cheaper than Hendon or Golders Green and only a 5/10 minute drive from those areas.

Kingsbury United Synagogue has had  five Rabbis in its seventy years. The present incumbent, Rabbi Zvi Cohen, recently succeeded Rabbi Maurice Hool, who was our Rabbi for over half of the community's life.

We were the first community to embrace Project Seed. The first United Synagogue Mikva for over a century was built on our premises, in large part due to the work of Rabbi Hool, and we were the first community of the United Synagogue to have its own voluntary Chevra Kadisha (Burial Society). From the community have come a number of Rabbis, leading Hebraic scholars, presidents of both the JNF and Bnei Brith and senior civil servants of the United Synagogue. A large number of our girls and boys have gone to Seminaries and Yeshivas both in this country and in Israel.

In 1996, to celebrate our sixtieth anniversary, virtually every member, both past and present, subscribed to the writing of a new Sefer Torah,  the necessary funds being realised in slightly over six months.

We are a very friendly community, and are always supportive and hospitable towards new members.

Over 100 of our members and their families have made aliyah successfully, contributing to a large Kingsbury contingent in the Holy Land.

We have opened a page for reminiscences from those of you no longer living in the Community.  Click here  to see who has spilt the beans so far.

For further information about membership e-mail the shul.

About Kol Nefesh Masorti

Our values
Kol Nefesh is a Masorti (Conservative) community/chavura creating a new vision within Anglo Jewry where tradition together with openness to change and evolution is valued. We are proud to pioneer a community that provides a warm welcome and encouragement for everyone to participate on an equal basis, according to his/her wish and ability. We aim to provide a platform for critical Jewish study, to challenge our minds and enliven our soul. Synagogue skills are taught to all who desire them. We are a community of all ages and are together committed to:

Learning

Observing Jewish Tradition

Respecting each other

Empowering each person to take responsibility for their own Judaism both in
services and community

Equal opportunities for all

Being a supportive Jewish community

Our organisation
Kol Nefesh has adopted a novel approach to its management.

We believe that every member has something to contribute, every one of us can make a difference, so instead of the traditional hierarchical structure with synagogue council and its officers, the community has an innovative management structure which allows all members to participate in the decision making process.

Each aspect of the community's needs is covered by a pelach (segment) e.g. Security, Services, Adult Education, Youth & children, Community Care, Communications, Membership, Burial and Finance. Every member has the opportunity to join one or more of these p'lachim.

Every 3-4 months the community holds an Asseifah (General meeting) to which all members are invited.

The community holds an annual review where we critically analyse the effectiveness of this innovative structure and make adjustments where necessary.

We are represented at the Assembly of Masorti Synagogues and at the Board of Deputies of British Jews.

Sinai is a dynamic, vibrant and diverse community, and is the largest progressive community in Yorkshire, based in Leeds, with members throughout the region.

Established in 1944 by a small, enthusiastic group with determination and vision, our present flagship progressive community is thriving with a wide range of social, cultural and educational opportunities, along with a choice of services.

Our doors are always open for those who want to call in to see what we are about… you will be made to feel very welcome. Everything we do is driven by our progressive values of Community, Repair of the World, Learning & Prayer. This usually involves much fun and a lot of food! In fact there is so much to do that we now employ two Rabbis whose distinctive approaches help maintain tradition within the context of a modern world.

We’d love to have you join us – so please let us know you are coming… and we’ll put the Yorkshire Tea on!

There will be lots of like-minded people, who you hope to join and who will welcome you to their various groups.

The big difference is that shul is real rather than virtual and what it offers can benefit both your spiritual and physical well-being.

At Muswell Hill shul you will find something on offer whatever your interest or age.

We have a thriving nursery and a playgroup  for the youngest children.

Older children can get involved in our fabulous youth group Iclub

as well as learning at the cheder which prides itself on teaching in an experiential and fun way.

As you continue your Jewish journey, Muswell Hill offers you adult education, Shabbat on the Hill and social events throughout the year such as our famous Harmony and Humour.

We also run a friendship and luncheon club for our older members.

About NLS

Our Origin and Philosophy

New London Synagogue was founded in 1964 by Rabbi Dr. Louis Jacobs, z"l, as a Congregation devoted to traditional Judaism with an ideology which interprets the Torah and Jewish teachings in the light of contemporary knowledge and scholarship. We have always been a pioneering congregation, leading the way to an enlightened Judaism and representing a rare combination of intellectual integrity together with loyalty to the finest traditions of the Jewish way of life.

A Web site has been launched dedicated to promoting the teachings and approach of our Founder Rabbi, Dr. Louis Jacobs, z"l,  one of the world's most distinguished rabbinic scholars and authors. To visit the site click here -  www.louisjacobs.org.

Our services are traditional and we use the new Authorised Daily Prayer Book with commentary by former Chief Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, and both the Hertz and Etz Hayyim Chumashim. Our main service is led by a professional Chazan (Cantor Jason Green) and seeks to maintain the finest musical traditions of Anglo Jewry.  Men and women sit separately with parallel seating downstairs and a Ladies Gallery upstairs. Women are counted in the Minyan and encouraged to say Kaddish.

We also have a second service - Minyan Chadash - that is less formal, participatory, and fully egalitarian. Minyan Chadash generally meets on the first Shabbat of each month and on the chagim. Click here for the Minyan Chadash page.

The congregation are invited to kiddush every Shabbat after the service. There's something very special about eating together as a community: we share in the mitzvah of sanctifying Shabbat over wine or a l'chayim (whiskey); we enjoy delicious kosher food together; and we get a weekly schmooze with friends both old and new. If you're interested in sponsoring a kiddush, please click the button at left (or mobile users, below).

We recognise that Judaism has always been a combination of tradition and change, an ever-evolving search for an understanding of God's teachings and for the way of life which will be pleasing in God's eyes.  It is our belief that 21st-century Judaism can be flexible enough to meet the challenges of new times, yet firm enough to remain loyal to the core of Jewish tradition and practice.

Through our extensive programme of services, classes, lectures, life cycle events, Bar/Bat Mitzvah training, conversion classes and communal celebrations we provide our members with opportunities for religious, spiritual and intellectual growth.

As a member of Masorti Judaism and the World Council of Conservative Synagogues - we are a part of a large, world-wide movement of like-minded groups with close ties to congregations and individuals in Israel and throughout the world.

The New West End Synagogue in St Petersburgh Place, Bayswater, is one of the oldest and undoubtedly the most beautiful synagogue buildings in London and, indeed, in the country. It is only the second synagogue to achieve Grade 1 listed status and has been described by English Heritage as "the architectural high watermark of Anglo-Jewish architecture". Click here for information on the history and architecture of the building.

The synagogue, which is a constituent of the United Synagogue (Orthodox), serves the Jewish communities of Bayswater, Notting Hill, Kensington, Hammersmith and West London. Opened in 1879, it has in recent years enjoyed a major communal renaissance. The New West End provides a full range of communal activities for all ages and tastes. These include regular children's services for the under 5s and over 5s; Hebrew classes for children up to Bar or Bat Mitzvah age; the NWE Young Professionals Group; regular adult education seminars and lectures; a keep fit group for ladies; an active social committee; a Guild, which organises a range of lectures, outings and charitable activities; an Israel Group which arranges lectures and briefings on the Middle East by experts from all sides of the political spectrum; a Cares Group, which ensures that elderly and infirm members receive regular contact; and a Friendship Club, which meets monthly for more senior members.

The following is taken from the old website.  We are in the process of updating it.

The North Hendon Adath Yisroel Synagogue is situated in a purpose built building within the grounds of the Hasmonean High School for Boys in Holders Hill Road Hendon, North West London. There are at present about 175 families included in the membership, a high proportion with children under bar/bat mitzvah. The Shul is a constituent of the Union of Orthodox Hebrew Congregations although the members originate from a wide spectrum of backgrounds. As well as Minyanim for all Teffilos throughout the week, the Shul has an extensive range of Shiurim ranging from a daily Daf Yomi Shiur to a monthly Sunday Bagel and Coffee Shiur. Gemillus Chasodim and Hachnosas Orchim is high on the  riorities of members, and a Charity Fund raises substantial funds for individuals and families within the community.

We draw our strength and direction from the Torah, from the rich Rabbinical interpretations of the Talmud and the continuing history of Judaism. We seek to implement the practice of Judaism in a way which is rooted in tradition and modern in practice.

We are a welcoming and inclusive community. Men and women participate equally, families sit together, and we use both Hebrew and English in our services

PORTSMOUTH AND SOUTHSEA

Elm Grove, Southsea, The Thicket, England
Phone: 01705 821494

Over the years, the Jews of Portsmouth developed an intimate relationship with the city of their adoption. This relationship was apparent when the first permanent synagogue was established in 1700 and was symbolised by the installation of the Hanoverian coat of arms set up in the synagogue around that time. Royal arms had been introduced into English churches when the monarch became head of the church in 1536. Most of these were destroyed during Queen Mary’s reign and the reintroduction of coats of arms came after the establishment of the Commonwealth. The practice was made compulsory in 1660 although falling into disuse during the nineteenth century[96]. Unlike the coats of arms erected in churches which were mostly of wood, the Portsmouth arms in the synagogue were in cast metal and have been dated as around 1780. No association can be found with any royal visitors to the synagogue at that time or any other time and it can only be speculated that the arms were installed, as Roth surmised, without any recorded ceremonials, either in keeping with the local practice of Anglican churches or as a demonstration of loyalty by local Jewish subject  (Dr Aubrey Weinberg (other forms of civic involvement )

POTTERS BAR

Great North Road, London, AL9 6DB, Meadowcroft, England
Phone: 01707 656202

During and after the war Jews from Cockfosters and Southgate came to Potters Bar and Brookmans Park, being just north of the green belt, attracted by the countryside, cheap properties and the Jewish Golf Club.

The Unerman family, who were high up on the Golf Club committee, arranged for the club to close three days a year for High Holyday services, and this has continued to the present day.

At that time it was decided to form an association called 'The Potters Bar Jewish Centre", which was used to arrange functions, education charity events and other social events.

In the late 60's after much discussion it was decided to become affiliated to the United Synagogue and the Jewish Centre was disbanded.

At first about 20 families signed up, but this has increased over the years to nearly 90 members. Services were held every Friday and one Saturday a month in the Unerman's garden shed, which property was consecrated .

With help from the United Synagogue in 1989 we purchased a property in Bell Bar, a few miles outside the town for use as sevices and as a residence for the rabbi and his family. This property was sold in 2009 as the members wished to relocate to a more central position in Potters Bar.

At least one Jewish family living in the area has been traced back as far as 1842. Eventually the group grew to 13 families, who declared themselves a community in 1886.

On the 31st of October 1900, Reading Synagogue officially opened with an engaging public ceremony, packed to capacity with dignitaries, and lead by the then Chief Rabbi Hermann Marcus Adler.

The beautiful Synagogue,  a Grade 2 listed, to a traditional design, in the Moorish style has a warm and homely feel and stands to-day on its original site at the junction of Goldsmid Road and Clifton Street, which is also within a 5 minutes walk from the town centre.

The UHC is an independent orthodox synagogue operating under the auspices of the Chief Rabbi of the British Commonwealth. We are an amalgamation of a number of older shuls, dating back to the middle of the nineteenth century, which finally came together on one site on Shadwell Lane, Leeds in 1986, creating an inspiring purpose built shul.

As one of the principal “mainstream” orthodox synagogues in Leeds we cater for a broad sweep of members, recognising their differing levels of commitment and affiliation whilst holding firm to our orthodox halakhicposition. We aim to be inclusive, not exclusive, and to provide a rooted home for present and future members. We recognise that at each stage in life people have different needs of us, and we work to provide for all of these – for children, youth, young and older adults, the elderly, the well and the infirm. As well as providing the usual synagogue services we offer pastoral, advisory and counselling facilities, together with educational and social event. Within the Leeds Jewish community, we aim to provide our own community for our members.

We particularly welcome new members and prospective members, and as well as our “regulars”, those who wish to know more, do more, or have need of our services, as those needs arise. We aim, indeed, to welcome everyone.

Sheffield & District Reform Jewish Congregation

PO BOX 675, Sheffield, S11 8TE, SW PDO, England
Phone: 0771 920 9259

We are a small Congregation based in Sheffield, in the North of England, UK. We formed in 1989 from a nucleus of members of Sinai Synagogue in Leeds living in the Sheffield area – assisted by Rabbi Walter Rothschild (then the Rabbi at Sinai Synagogue, Leeds). We are affiliated to MRJ (the Movement for Reform Judaism - previously RSGB - Reform Synagogues of Great Britain) - and generally follow their pattern of services.

Services
We normally hold synagogue services two to three times a month - with some Friday night and some Shabbat morning services. For dates of future services check the ‘Service’ list in our ‘Diary’.

Rabbi? – what Rabbi?
As a small Congregation we don’t have a Rabbi. Services are lead by lay-leaders – although we do invite Rabbinic Students to run some services and to help us at High Holy Days. Most other facilities and ‘services’ are run and managed by our Management Committee.

Sheffield Jewish Community and Centre

125-127 Psalter Lane, Sheffield, S11 8UX, , England

Sheffield has a modern synagogue that celebrated its 10-year anniversary in January 2010. It is small and welcoming so that everyone who attends feels part of the service. The Chief Rabbi, Lord Sachs, consecrated it in March 2000 and remarked on how well designed it is and involving for all who attend services. Tours of the synagogue can be arranged for groups who are interested, contact us if you are interested in finding out about this.

Attached to the Synagogue are a number of function rooms of varying sizes as well as a modernMikvah, classrooms for the Cheder and excellent kosher catering facilities. Every week after the Shabbat morning service and at festivals, The Guild provides a kiddush. The largest room is a beautiful multi-functional banqueting room which also has a stage at one end and is used for concerts and plays as well as community meals, quizzes and other events.

We practise Liberal Judaism in a warm and friendly atmosphere, priding ourselves on our informal and inclusive approach.

We welcome couples in mixed marriages and partnerships and our community includes many families where only one parent is Jewish.

Our children in mixed families are recognised as Jewish if they’re being raised as Jewish, whether they have a Jewish mother or Jewish father. All children in our community are treated equally and are invited to attend Cheder, become Bar/Bat Mitzvah and complete Kabbalat Torah.

We like to think of ourselves as one big happy family, with members spanning three generations, from nought to ninety-plus years of age.

What we offer

We offer everything you might want in your local Jewish community.

We celebrate the full Jewish family lifecycle and hold weekly and festival services. We run a vibrant Cheder and Gan (for toddlers), as well as stimulating adult education sessions. We also have regular Chavurot and social events, including suppers, theatre outings, rambles and quizzes.

South London Liberal Synagogue is an open and welcoming community and, as part of Liberal Judaism, it is committed to developing and sustaining Judaism for the future. Any Jewish person may become a member regardless of gender, sexual orientation or marital status. At SLLS, we enable individuals and families to commit to Jewish values and a Jewish way of life.?

We welcome families containing a non-Jewish partner; we have learned from experience that when we embrace them we enrich our community. We consider the children of those families to be Jewish if they are raised as such. We welcome individuals who want to learn more about Jewish life and religion, including those who are sincerely interested in converting to Judaism. We have a membership category of “Friend of SLLS” for those who are not eligible for full membership.?

Our current minister is Rabbi Janet Darley.

We have a range of activities for all ages including a religion school, GESHER, which meets on Saturday mornings and includes special toddler programmes, LITTLE STARS, throughout Gesher termtime. We have a film club and other social and cultural activities as well as adult education activities, including Hebrew classes.?

True to the universal ideals of the founders of Liberal Judaism, we see ourselves as a part of the wider community and are proud to be part of a lively multi-cultural area. We have a long history of activity in interfaith and community endeavours. We warmly welcome visitors to our synagogue and are part of the Streatham Faith Trail. We are also a Fairtrade synagogue and belong to South London Citizens.

What is it about Southend and Westcliff that makes our town so special? Is it the sea air? Is it the less frenetic pace of life? What is it that makes us tick? The answer is that we are a happy vibrant community comprising over 700 families.

We tease family and friends in London saying that to travel from London to Southend is twice the distance from Southend to London! They do not realise how easy it is for us to get to London. It takes me under an hour to get to NW London by road . Our excellent train service only takes forty five minutes from Westcliff into Fenchurch Street station (which is about the same time that commuters need to reach the City from NW London).

But surely you say, Westcliff is a bit of back water? Hardly! There are numerous excellent shops and major stores around the town, and Bluewater and Lakeside are close by. We have our own Kosher Butcher, Baker and Deli within the complex. There are four (two for girls and two for boys) grammar schools in Southend and Westcliff which are among the top publically funded schools in the country.

The Palace Theatre and the Cliffs Pavilion stage major West End Shows and host national and international stars.

Most important of all, the price of housing is really a fraction of what it costs in London. A visit to a local estate agent will tell you that a four bed detached house will cost less than half of its NW London equivalent.

As a Congregation, we are quite self sufficient and are vigorously led by our Minister, Rabbi Binyamin Bar. We have our own Cheder and Youth Club. We have a multitude of communal activities for all ages, and many charity and social committees. The Congregation has a minyan each morning and evening. Over the High Holydays we have additional services and discussion groups for the whole community. Our Community Voice magazine is of a very high standard and has won national prizes awarded by the Board of Deputies. Each night of Chanukah, we publically light our communal Menorah outside the Cliffs Pavilion, and are usually fortified throughout this event either with doughnuts or Latkes!

In 1943 a handful of families, looking for an alternative to Orthodox Judaism, started holding services in each other's homes. Following the ideals of the founders of the Liberal Jewish movement, they were determined to build a community of like-minded Jews - people who were looking for a form of their religion that was meaningful and relevant to 20th century Britain and one that provided equal status for men and women in synagogue life.

The present site was acquired in 1954; the original house, named Richard Michael House, is now used as administrative offices, by the Religion School and other Synagogue groups. What was the large garden is now the site of the Schindler Hall and provides High Holyday seating for 450 congregants and for 160 at sit down functions.

In 1989, we opened our purpose-built Synagogue situated at the side of the house. 160 congregants can pray in this beautiful and tranquil sanctuary. The whole self-contained complex serves the needs of some 850 members and their children, with a wide range of religious and secular activities. Now in its seventh decade, Southgate Progressive Synagogue continues to develop as a warm and friendly community and we aim to make everyone feel very welcome.

Always looking to the future needs of our community, the proposed building project will provide much needed space for Youth activities, as well as providing additional facilities for the less able.

Southgate Progressive Synagogue is an active constituent of Liberal Judaism and is represented on the Board of Deputies of British Jews. The Synagogue is a supporter of the Leo Baeck College - Centre for Jewish Education in Finchley.

Virtual Southport was created back in September 1996 by Kerry Bailey with Ed Horwich.
Together they started molding VS. With some help offered by a local ISP the metamorphasis from idea to fully a fledged Town Web Site happened rapidly and expansion began in earnest. Soon VS gained its own server facilities and these now drive an interactive database system that dynamically delivers Virtual Southport to your browser .

Over the years Ed has been the architect of several re-designs of VS, whilst Kerry has fostered the community side of VS by bringing in contributors and collaborators; he is also the mainstay and webmaster of the VS Chat Forum, one of the most popular parts of the site.

Early in 1999 Ed formed a web design company, then known as Pacificstream, and this took VS through the next phase of growth. That company is now called EYELOOK, and using some of the best programmers from Southport and Europe is able to provide hosting and design for other enterprises.

Virtual Southport continues to provide a friendly environment for individuals to chat, and for businesses to showcase their products and services.

Our community was started in 1990, which means that this will be our 25th anniversary year. Over that relatively short period we have grown from services in front lounges of members’ houses to where we are today, at the very heart of the South Hertfordshire Jewish community. A truly phenomenal story.

To celebrate, we have already held a number of activities during the first half of the year aimed at including all parts of our community, such as the a Jazz Brunch and 25 Friday Nights, and we have more events planned for the coming months including:

What is a Jewish community without its shul? But what would a shul be without its community?

At St Albans United Synagogue, we pride ourselves on our welcoming and friendly atmosphere. We always put the community at the centre of everything we do, and the enthusiasm we see at services and events shows that, clearly, we’re doing something right!

Guests to our synagogue often tell us they enjoy coming because they never feel like just another face in the crowd. Whether we have ten people or a hundred, we work to make sure everyone is included.

St Albans – the ancient city turned bustling modern suburb – is the perfect setting for our community. We are one of the oldest established Jewish communities in Hertfordshire, but we have never stopped moving forwards and innovating new ways to grow and become the best community we can.

But don’t just take our word for it! Why not visit us for a Shabbat and see it all with your own eyes.

People love to connect with other like-minded people, in order to share their opinions, vision and thoughts. Whether its politics, sports, movies or music - everyone likes to be in the company of people with similar interests. The purpose of creating this blog was to bring music lovers like you closer to each other, and learn about your interests and experiences in this area.

It is said that music is a great healer; it has the magic to soothe every pain, sorrow, anxiety, stress and grief. It is indeed a great form of art that defies geographical boundaries, age, gender or religion and brings people closer to each other. Having a penchant for this beautiful art form, I decided to create this blog to get an opportunity to connect others who also admire it.

News and updates about the greatest music videos, movie tracks and remarkable musicians will be regular features of the blog. You will find information about new releases and their reviews also.

Perhaps you would like to talk about a particular interesting topic or share some fascinating info with others in this community? You are welcome to send a request or article to me; you may even like to share your talent by sending your own video or music. If you are an outstanding musician, lyricist or singer, you could provide some tips to other budding artists through this blog. You can contact me via the information in the “contact us” page on the site.

It would be great to receive comments and suggestions that you think would help in improving the site. I am always ready to acknowledge your ideas! Thank you once again for visiting the site.

West Central Liberal Synagogue

We welcome you to West Central Liberal Synagogue (WCLS), whether you are visiting London, travelling through or live in this wonderful vibrant city. WCLS is located in the centre of London in the Bloomsbury district and has a long and illustrious history having been established by Lily Montagu back in 1928. At that time many of the local Jewish community were employed in the fashion industry and as such were obliged to work on Saturday mornings. A solution needed to be found and Miss Lily, as she was known, created the unique concept of a morning Shabbat service that is held at 3 pm in the afternoon. The tradition became engrained and so even though Saturday working in the “rag trade” is no longer the standard for our Community, the 3 pm Service remains a fixed part of our life at WCLS, always followed by Kiddush, tea and schmoozing.

We are proud to be part of Liberal Judaism, with men and women taking equal roles in all aspects of the synagogue, services and community life. We welcome all and should you wish to attend services or enquire further please contact our administrator Carole Schomberg onoffice@wcls.org.uk. At present we do not have our own Rabbi and services are being led by visiting Rabbis and lay members with our Cantor, Adrian Harman, also supporting services.

We are delighted that Rabbi Tabick continues to lead Shabbat services and study sessions at WCLS twice a month: Judaism 101 looks at some of the basics in pre service study sessions and post service “Torah Teas” include learning, discussions and tea! All sessions are stand-alone so you can pick and choose your favourite topics. Check the programme on this page for more details.

We are a lively, active, inclusive community of progressive Jews. We welcome everyone, from everywhere around the globe, and we provide varied Shabbat and festival services, formal and informal alike, family services, tots’ services and many social activities. Many people who are seeking to become Jewish choose West London, and our services are easy to follow whatever your background. We are also deeply committed to social action, and run a drop-in for asylum seekers once a month and a night shelter for homeless people once a week, and are exploring more and more ways to work with others in our local community to provide help to the most needy. We work closely with local churches and other communal organisations, and rejoice in our interfaith activities, especially where we can work together on particular projects.

Our goal is to provide an exciting and spiritually nourishing Jewish life for everyone of all ages, from religious services to social action, from community activities to study and learning, from religion school to youth clubs and everything else besides. And we aim to include as many people as we can, young and old alike, in our volunteering within and beyond the community. At West London Synagogue, there really is something for everyone, and we want to inspire, welcome and serve all those who enter our doors.

Fernhurst Gardens, London, Edgware, England

Edgware Jewry traces back to the 1920s, following the extension to Edgware in 1924 of the underground railway’s Northern Line.

The first community was established in Edgware in 1927 which formed into the present Edgware United Synagogue. The Yeshurun community was established in 1946 by the Federation of Synagogues as a smaller, more traditional and less establishment based alternative. The first services of the congregation were held on Shabbos 26th October 1946 and a shul on the present site in Fernhurst Gardens was consecrated in 1950.

The building we see today was the result of Yeshurun’s expansion in the ensuring 25 years and was officially opened in 1975. Further expansion and modernisation has taken place since, including the complete refurbishment of the Leff Hall in 2006.
