he origin of our Congregation goes back to the turn of the 20th century, when Jewish immigrants from Roumania, a small minority in a developing Jewish com munity in Toronto, sought refuge from the strangeness of their new environment in the company of their landsleit (countrymen). Social gatherings led in the course of time to the desire to pray together on the Holy Days and to establish a congregation of their own. Indispensable to the fulfillment of their wish was the procurement of a Sefer Torah. Their success in achieving this goal by a sacrificial campaign of obtaining donations of nickels and dimes from the new immigrants encouraged the group to move from a room in a Synagogue to rented quarters above a Turkish bath, and then to a room over a grocery store. The year was 1903. A substantial increase in membership led to the formal election of the first president and secretary. The most important event of the year, however, was the acquisition of a cemetery far to the north of Toronto as it was at the time, on Roselawn Avenue. After a brief spell in other rented premises, the fledgling congregation finally bought two "cottages" on Centre Avenue which continued to serve as the congregational home until 1911. In that year the Congregation proudly completed and dedicated a new building on Bathurst near Dundas, the site where for thirty years, the First Roumanian Hebrew Congregation Adath Israel, as it was officially known, flourished. The popular name of the congregation was "The Roumainishe Shul."

During all these years the Synagogue functioned as the busy center of an active religious and social life where various important membership organizations were established. A warm feeling of friendship pervaded the membership fostered by bonds of family kinship and origin.

Rabbi Abraham Kelman was the Synagogue's first full-time Rabbi serving from 1939 until 1947. In September 1947, Rabbi Erwin Schild, freshly ordained by the Yeshivah Torath Chaim of Toronto, was engaged as the new Rabbi of the Congregation. The membership numbered about 150 families at the time.

Havurah Har Kodesh Montreal

QUEBEC, , Canada
Operation Hours: Fri Evening Services,High Holidays
Phone: 514-489-0686

The first Havurah group was conceived in the 3rd or 4th century C.E. as an esoteric, mystical, and elite circle of scholars who were prepared to embark on the study of the Kabbalah- the book of Jewish Mysticism. Aside from kabbalistic practices, the Kabbalists created much of the liturgy found in the Orthodox Siddur still in use today. Havurahs in our time have opened up to the interested masses and have become a "Friendship Circle" or a "Jewish Community of Friends". In our era, Havurah is a term generally associated with free, creative worship and Jewish renewal. It is designed to accommodate people without synagogue affiliation, religious training and experience in Judaism or for those who are seeking a novel approach to Judaism.
History and Evolution of Havurah
In the 1960's Reb Zalman Shachter-Shalomi founded a religious organization, now known as the P'nai Or Religious Fellowship. From this seed grew many Havurah groups across North America, South America, Europe and Israel. Our Har Kodesh has received much of its inspiration, guidance and direction from P'nai Or. Har Kodesh Montreal was founded in September 1988 by a group of 10 individuals who, while being exposed to various spiritualities in the past, still found the need to express and explore their spirituality within a Jewish context. Rabbi Sara Lea Grafstein  then of Toronto was the individual who gave shape to the creation of Har Kodesh.
Goals of Har Kodesh
Our goals are to explore and express our Judaism in traditional and non-traditional ways. This new expression unfolds within a homey, egalitarian, open-minded environment, accepting all who feel the need to explore Judaism regardless of religious background and experience.
Activities
We are looking forward to an engaging return to:celebrate Oneg Shabbat, where we pray, chant, sing, dance, meditate, have discussions and share a pot-luck vegetarian Shabbat meal. We also celebrate most of the major Jewish holidays together. In the recent past and with Hashem's blessing these will return: Women's Rosh Chodesh group, an annual retreat, a study group ,occasional Shabbat morning services, life event celebrations, havdalah services, melava malkas.invitations for speakers, Rabbis or other spiritual leaders to come for an Oneg or a Shabbaton.

KST is a warm, friendly community that strives to provide a supportive and respectful environment that encourages religious growth. You will find that it is large enough to provide a broad range of services, learning and volunteer opportunities for all age groups, yet small and intimate enough to make each individual’s contribution count.

The challenges of modern Judaism are as complex and divergent as the Jewish people themselves. At Kehillat Shaarei Torah, we strive to make our services and programs relatable. All of our activities reflect our commitment to learning Torah, the Jewish people, the State of Israel and to a life filled with good deeds.

Our membership is diverse, but what we have in common is our commitment to preserving our Jewish culture and heritage for ourselves and for our children and grandchildren. We hope you’ll come and introduce yourself to Rabbi Kanofsky and the rest of the Kehillat Shaarei Torah family.

The Montreal Torah Center (MTC) is part of the worldwide Chabad Lubavitch movement.

Inspired and directed by the Rebbe, of righteous memory MTC, headed by
Rabbi Moishe and Nechama New and Rabbi Itchy and Zeldie Treitel, began operating in 1991, renting space in an indoor shopping mall.  Over the ensuing decade, steady growth compelled MTC to expand its premises three times.

Although beginning primarily as an adult education facility, MTC soon blossomed into a
small-scale community center.  Defying the trend of synagogue mergers and closures
that has plagued Quebec for decades, in 2002 MTC announced that it intended to build an
$8 million community center that would contribute to the revitalization of Jewish life in Montreal.
By the grace of G-d, and with the help and support of many dedicated
individuals, the dream became a reality.

The new center has been in operation since September, 2004 and continues to
attract growing numbers of Jews, of all ages and from all backgrounds,

particularly with no previous affiliation.

Or Hadash Congregation

17665 Leslie St Unit 14, ONTARIO, , Canada
Phone: 905 898-2220

The short history of Or Hadash is that of a few passionate people proving Jewish life could flourish in an area where others had thought it couldn't exist. For years, Jewish families in Newmarket and Northern York Region functioned as a "diaspora within the diaspora" - each having trekked from some other community to find themselves largely isolated from Jewish living.

Then, a few families informally started to get together to celebrate their Jewish identity. This lead to the establishment of a small Hebrew School to ensure that their children could carry forward our sacred traditions. Later, these families decided there was a need for more. On November 7, 1993, Or Hadash was founded as a formal synagogue and a member of the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ).

As our membership continued to grow, we offered services in several different locations until we were able to secure our very own space on Leslie Street.  Ten years later the growing congregation permitted a move to Botsford Street in historic downtown Newmarket.

Where others saw weakness in being so detached from so called ordinary Jewish life, we saw an opportunity. Today we continue to remain true to our heymish roots as a warm, friendly and egalitarian Jewish Community.

We ARE the Jewish Community in Newmarket and Northern York Region, and we welcome you to explore all we have to offer!

At Temple Israel, we believe every Jew should be affiliated with a synagogue.

Why? Synagogues bring us together as a congregation; they help us to define our individual spiritual quest; they ensure a place exists for Judaism to thrive within our present day community and for generations to come.

Life today is far more complex than when our ancestors stood at Mt. Sinai and entered into a covenant with God. But the covenant of membership, the defining relationship between a person and the Jewish community, has not lost its significance.

At Temple Israel, we are a Reform Jewish congregation and are proud to foster an environment where:

there are stimulating and enjoyable events for the mind and soul

individuals can learn and comfortably question Jewish teaching

families of all shapes, sizes and backgrounds are welcome

tikun olam (repairing the world) is as natural as breathing

each individual makes a valued contribution

and gender equality is paramount

Shaare Zedek Congregation established in 1953 is a traditional synagogue based on Halakah, embracing Conserva-dox style Judaism.  Our dynamic young clergy headed by Rabbi Alan W. Bright M.A. and accompanied by Rev. Yossi Even-hen are committed to our Mission of engaging our community in Jewish learning, spirituality and social activities.

At present, the congregation has chosen to remain unaffiliated and prides itself on being eclectic in its services.  We draw extensively from the traditional liturgy, as well as from the Conservative approach to Judaism.  We proudly daven using the new Koren/Saks  siddur and the Etz Chaim Chumash.   Shaare Zedek is an inclusive Jewish congregation that offers a warm welcoming, nurturing and enriching home to those who seek a meaningful and enduring connection to Judaism.

We are blessed with a vibrant and active membership of all ages who find meaning and commitment to synagogue life.  Our doors and hearts are always open to our members, non-members and visitors alike.

Feel free to come and try us.

Shalom! Welcome to Shaarei Shomayim, a Modern Orthodox community of more than 750 families, located in the heart of midtown Toronto and within the eruv. We stand for Torah, the Jewish people and the State of Israel; we are constantly building a synagogue community where it all matters.

Shabbat is the core of synagogue life, and we are proud to offer multiple services, youth programs and educational programs each Shabbat. During the week, we provide a complete infrastructure of Jewish learning, education, community volunteering, socializing, and visiting the sick. We seek to inspire our members to live a life imbued with Torah values, dedicated to community, education, the Jewish People and the State of Israel.

Join our growing family of families!

Over 60 new families have joined our shul community over the past two years, most of whom are young families looking for a place where kids are busy with dynamic programming and parents can enjoy a range of services and classes. We invite you to visit our shul; we are confident you will enjoy the experience.

The "old" shul, which had been our Congregation's home since 1954 (until it was closed due to flood damage in September 2012), had been sold weeks earlier, and Friday was closing day for the deal.  In the days prior to May 29th, the Rabbi and several members of the congregation worked feverishly to remove plaques and other mementos commemorating more than a half-century of service to the community.

Although the chapel at the Shaar Hashomayim synagogue has served us well, and will continue to be our home for the foreseeable future, I, for one, mourn the permanent loss of the Shaarey Zedek building.  Now that we have no building of our own, I wonder about our future.

In the short term, I think it's appropriate that the photo on our website, depicting the main sanctuary in the "old" shul, be replaced with something else - something that won't result in a flood of tears coming to me every time I see it.

Our Mission: Shaarey Zedek Synagogue is a centre for Conservative Judaism that welcomes the community to experience spiritual growth, continuing education and the enrichment of lifecycle events. That is a big task, but we're working hard every day to live up to this duty. For millennia, synagogues have been the place for lifecycle events and a gathering place for communities, and for a time this connection that people once had began to dwindle. "Synagogues - a place to have your naming, your bar mitzvah, your wedding, your funeral...oh, and High Holy Days of course" many would think and a large number of people still do. Shaarey Zedek regrettably was no exception,  but an evolution has taken place in recent years. Synagogue life has been transformed for the young and the old come to reconnect with Judaism in ways they didn’t think possible, or simply weren’t made possible in the past. Rethought, revised and reignited, our focus has been placed on creating meaningful social-cultural and worship experiences, tailored to suit different generations with different needs. The result: varieties of traditional and alternative services, Judaic study chavurot to classes, guest speakers and scholars presenting old values and new views, as well as programs for young children, families, adults including special programs designed for those in their 20s and 30s, as well as seniors. There is an undeniable energy pulsating at Shaarey Zedek that you must experience for yourself. Whether you come to worship, to socialize, to learn, to volunteer, or to have a lifecycle event, the new Shaarey Zedek is awaiting your discovery. It’s a place that has been rebuilt, with you in mind. Let us surprise you

Temple Har Zion

7360 Bayview Avenue, ONTARIO, , Canada
Phone: 1-705-474-0600   Fax: (905) 889-2258

Temple Har Zion was founded with a strong, positive vision of Judaism and congregational life. We want each family member to feel comfortable and see Har Zion as an extension of the home.

To reach that goal, we encourage participation in all aspects of our community's life. The synagogue's members have created committees, activities and opportunities for active involvement in the decision-making process. We want our Temple to be a community of people who care for and about one another as well as rejoice with and support each other through life's experiences and events.

As a Reform Jewish congregation, we are part of a dynamic, developing movement. We are linked philosophically and historically with the creative and successful ways Judaism has faced the challenges of change and growth over the past 4,000 years. We meet those challenges by believing that our religion and teachings are eternal but the forms may change.

As a movement and a synagogue, we are committed to the rich possibilities of a full and involved Jewish life including:

preserving our Jewish heritage and teaching it to our children

making our services meaningful and accessible

reinforcing and enhancing Jewish identity

providing family participation

ensuring equality for men and women in all aspects of Temple life

emphasizing adult education

committing to social action

We welcome those who share this vision of Jewish life. We believe that the stronger our community life is, the more ways there are to enjoy the fullness and satisfaction that Jewish living brings.
